Heifer International began its activities in Haiti in 1949 with animal shipments (cattle and goats) through churches and religious organizations. Heifer International office was inaugurated in 1999 in Les Cayes to help producers in the field of agriculture and livestock farming. In February 2005, a national office in Port-au-Prince was established. Once all state requirements and procedures were completed, Heifer Haiti was legally recognized as a non-governmental organization on July, 2006. Currently, Heifer Haiti has three offices in the country, one in Les Cayes, one in Cap-Haitian and the Haiti headquarters in Port-au-Prince.

Heifer Haiti works with rural Haitian communities through sustainable and integrated crop-livestock projects as a means of poverty reduction. Our strategy is to empower families to turn hunger and poverty into hope and prosperity. Our approach is more than just giving them a handout. We provide resources such as livestock, seeds, seedlings, training, micro-loan, technical and environmental regeneration assistance that helps bring sustainable agriculture and commerce to areas with a long history of poverty. Our animals provide the families with both food and reliable income, as agricultural products such as milk, eggs, and honey can be traded or sold at market. The key to our success is the practice of “Passing on the Gift,” (POG) whereby project beneficiaries agree to pass on the first female offspring livestock and training they have received, thereby creating a sustainable, replicable model that doubles the impact of the initial investment. Overall our integrated approach improves income of the farmers, empowers women, promotes youth farming, mitigates disaster and risk management, diversifies diets, transforms social status, and ensures accessibility to quality education and health.
